Omega three fatty acids

Omega-3 fatty acids can help dieters feel full longer and eat less, according to a study conducted by researchers from the University of Navarra, University of Iceland and University College Cork and published in the journal Appetite.

“[Omega-3s] could improve the patients’ compliance to changes in dietary habits required for weight loss and weight loss maintenance,” the researchers wrote.

Researchers placed 232 overweight or obese volunteers onto a lower calorie, balanced diet that was supplemented with either a low or high dose of omega-3s for eight weeks. The average age of participants was 31, and their average body mass index was 28.3 kg per square meter. The low omega-3 dose was 260 milligrams per day, while participants in the high-dose group were given 1,300 milligrams per day.

During the last two weeks of the experiments, researchers assessed the appetites of participants and found that those in the high dose group tended to feel hungry less frequently than those in the low dose group, when measurements were taken either immediately after or two hours following a meal.

The researchers also found that participants with higher blood levels of omega-3s and a healthier omega-3 to omega-6 ratio were also less likely to report being hungry after eating.

“The most important finding of this study is that subjects who eat a dinner rich in long chain omega-3 fatty acids feel less hunger and more full directly after and two hours after than their counterparts fed with the low long chain omega-3 fatty acids diet,” the researchers wrote. “This observation indicates that long chain omega-3 fatty acids modulate hunger signals.”

Omega-3 fatty acids are found in high concentrations in certain fish oils, flaxseeds and other seeds and nuts, and certain varieties of algae. Omega-6 fatty acids are found in high concentrations in vegetable oils. Recent research is suggested that omega-3s are essential for the healthy development of the central nervous system, and the higher ratio of omega-3s to omega-6s is important for cardiovascular health.

Vegetables

Vegetables Are Good For Weight Loss

Vegetable foods are perfect for weight control. They are low in calories, rich in dietary fiber to boost satiety levels, make great snacks and are full of dietary nutrients to help maintain an efficient metabolism. An ideal food option for anyone interested in weight loss or weight maintenance.

Nutritional Benefits of Vegetables

Fresh vegetables (raw, cooked or frozen) are one of the richest sources of vitamins and some important minerals. To help prevent vitamin deficiency, the World Health organisation (WHO) recommends a minimum daily intake of five portions of vegetables and fruits. For optimum nutritional intake, weekly consumption of specific amounts from each of five vegetable subgroups (dark green, orange, dry beans, starchy, and other vegetables) is recommended, as each subgroup provides a different array of nutrients.
Vegetables (eg. carrots, sweet-potatoes, and pumpkin, tomatoes, red sweet pepper, spinach, collards, turnip greens, kale, beet and mustard greens, green leaf lettuce, and romaine) contain vitamin A (beta-carotene). They also contain B-complex micronutrients, vitamins C, E and K. Vegetables such as cooked dry beans and peas, deep green leaves like spinach and mustard greens are useful sources of folate. Vegetables are also excellent sources of phytochemicals - the protective plant micronutrients like the carotenoids lycopene and lutein.

Vegetable-Rich Diets

Several studies show that populations with diets that are rich in vegetables have a significantly lower risk of heart disease, cancers and high blood pressure. Such diets also help reduce the risk of diverticulitis, and protect against cataract and macular degeneration, the major cause of loss of vision among people over age 65.

Anorexia genetic factors

Anorexia is eight times more common in people who have relatives with the disorder, and some experts estimate that genetic factors are the root cause of many cases of eating disorders. For example, a 2000 study reported that twins had a tendency to share specific eating disorders (anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and obesity). Researchers have identified specific chromosomes that may be associated with bulimia and anorexia. In particular, regions on chromosome 10 have been linked to bulimia as well as obesity. Some evidence has also reported an association with genetic factors responsible for serotonin, the brain chemical involved with both well-being and appetite. Researchers have also pinpointed certain proteins such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF). This protein may influence an individual’s susceptibility to developing an eating disorder.

In 2005, a team of researchers identified six core traits that they believe are linked to genes associated with bulimia and anorexia. These traits are:

* Minimum body mass index (BMI)
* Extreme concern over mistakes
* Age when a girl first starts to menstruate
* Food-related obsessions
* “Obsessionality” (a form of perfectionism)
* Anxiety

The researchers found that minimum BMI, concern over mistakes, age at first menstruation, and food-related obsessions were mostly associated with bulimia. Obsessionality and anxiety were mostly associated with anorexia. These differences indicate that different genes may be responsible for bulimia and anorexia.

The reason some people get anorexia isn’t known. People with anorexia may believe they would be happier and more successful if they were thin. They want everything in their lives to be perfect. People who have this disorder are usually good students. They are involved in many school and community activities. They blame themselves if they don’t get perfect grades, or if other things in life are not perfect.

The real couse of anorexia is unknown but the media and fashion agencies definitely have some influence in this. If you ever seen a fashion models, then you know the standards that agencies are command.

Eat slow-it’s healthier

It takes 20 minutes for our stomach to tell our brains that we are full. If we eat fast, we can eat way past what we need. This causes us to be overweight, develop chronic health problems and reduce our quality and quantity of life.

Here are 6 reasons why you should eat slow:

I started wondering why this happens and began my research, which turned into learning the effects of slow eating.

1. Portion control & Overeating prevention. When you eat slowly it is definitely hard to overeat. Slow eating little by little decreases the desire to eat, so you can stop eating before your plate is empty. It is suggested that it takes about 20 minutes for your stomach to produce the hormones telling your brain that you are full.

2. Weight control benefits. Slowly eating habit reduces the risk of becoming overweight. Recently Japanese researches found strong positive correlation between higher eating speed and obesity.

3. It can’t hurt you. Slow eating doesn’t have any negative effects on your health, but can bring you a number of benefits without extra costs.

4. Taste and enjoy your food. When you eat slowly, you end up tasting your food more. You will experience more of the flavors, textures and smells of the food you eat. At the same time this may become a small step to a more healthy diet. If you won’t like what you eat when you eat it slowly, probably the next time you will choose something of a better quality.

5. Digestion. Eating slowly and chewing properly improves your digestion. It is well known that digestion begins in the mouth. The more we chew our foods, the easier it is to digest them.

6. Heartburn (gastroesophageal reflux). Eating food quickly may cause a type of indigestion called gastroesophageal reflux.

Bulimia nervosa symptoms

People with bulimia are extremely concerned with their weight, yet they can’t fight the compulsion to binge. So they drastically overeat, and then they purge, fast, or exercise to get rid of the calories. This vicious cycle of bingeing and purging takes a toll on the body, and it’s even harder on emotional well-being. But the cycle can be broken. Effective bulimia treatment and support can help you or a loved one develop a healthier relationship with food and overcome feelings of anxiety, guilt, and shame.
